Usc Player Banned From Rose

Compiled From Wire Services

Phalen Pounds, a starter at right guard for Southern California, will not be allowed to play in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 because he violated team policy, coach John Robinson said.

The coach did not elaborate on the reason. Pounds, a 6-foot-7, 310-pound sophomore, was honorable mention All-Pac-10 this season.

Senior linebacker Marcus “Tex” Montgomery was suspended from the Iowa football team after being charged with assaulting an ex-girlfriend, athletic director Bob Bowlsby said.

The Hawkeyes leave today for El Paso, Texas, where they play Washington in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 29.

According to Johnson (Iowa) County court records, Montgomery, 25, of Walnut, Calif., punched the woman several times, dragged her down a flight of stairs and kicked her several times. The alleged incident occurred at the university’s chemistry building.

One-time Brigham Young lineman Craig K. Garrick has pleaded no contest to two third-degree felony counts of obtaining a prescribed drug by fraud at Provo, Utah.

Garrick, 36, was arrested Aug. 5 after purchasing two prescribed pain killers that he had a doctor call in under his employer’s name.

The agreement under which he entered his pleas in 4th District Court calls for Garrick to enter a treatment program. His counselor must provide regular updates to the court.

If Garrick violates the program at any time during the next year, he could face sentencing on the third-degree felonies. If he stays clean for the next year, the charges would be reduced to class A misdemeanors.
