Avalanche’s Roy Wins In Denver

Adam Deadmarsh scored a goal and set up Joe Sakic’s game-winner in the second period as the Colorado Avalanche ended a two-game home losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Friday night.

Patrick Roy made 18 saves and won for the first time in Denver and evened his record with the Avalanche at 3-3. Grant Fuhr made his career-best 34th straight start and was spectacular in goal for the Blues, who had been unbeaten in their five previous road games.

Colorado beat Fuhr at 15:07 of the second period with Al MacInnis in the penalty box for hooking. Deadmarsh found Sakic with a cross-rink pass and Sakic sent a wrist shot past Fuhr at 16:51 for his 23rd of the year.

Saku Koivu scored a tie-breaking, short-handed goal at 13:07 of the third period, his second of the game, in Montreal’s win over Pittsburgh.

Vincent Damphousse also scored two goals for Montreal, tying the score 2-2 on a power play at 10:13 of the third. NHL scoring leader Mario Lemieux assisted on a goal by Jaromir Jagr and now has points in all 28 games that he has played in this season.

New York erased a three-goal deficit with three power-play goals to tie Hartford and extend its home unbeaten streak to 16 games.

Despite 45 saves by Hartford goalie Sean Burke, the Rangers scored three consecutive goals with the manadvantage after Brendan Shanhan had scored two goals for the fourth time in five games and Robert Kron added a goal.

Ted Donato’s goal 1:37 into overtime lifted Boston to a win over Buffalo.

Donato, standing in front of the goal, rifled the puck past Andrei Trefilov on a pass from Dave Reid.

Garry Galley’s goal with 2:07 left in regulation tied the game for the Sabres, who mounted considerable pressure in the final 10 minutes.

Peter Bondra had a goal and two assists in Washington’s four-goal second period, and the Capitals went on to defeat Edmonton.

Stefan Ustorf had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who led 5-3 after two periods and finished with a 39-20 advantage in shots on goal. Washington is 4-0-1 against the Oilers at home since February 1990.

Zdeno Ciger got his team-high 16th goal for Edmonton and Doug Weight had two assists to extended his pointscoring streak to eight games.
