Teens Terrorize Subway Clerk

Compiled From Wire Services

Two teenagers laughed and pretended to light a match before they poured antifreeze into a token booth slot early Saturday, terrifying a clerk at a Manhattan subway station, the police said.

Officer Debra Kearns, a police spokeswoman, said the clerk was not injured. The youths fled the subway station, at Central Park West and 86th Street, shortly after the incident, which occurred about 12:30 a.m.

It comes two weeks after a Brooklyn token clerk died from burns received in an attack on his booth. The clerk, Harry P. Kaufman, 50, who was working at the Kingston-Throop Avenues station in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, was burned over most of his body in the attack, which occurred Nov. 26.

Police said Kaufman’s booth had been squirted with gasoline and set ablaze during an attempted robbery. Three teenage suspects have been indicted on second-degree murder charges in the case.
