Witty, Fitzrandolph Sweep

Compiled From Wire Services

Christine Witty and Casey FitzRandolph both won their 500- and 1,000-meter races again at the U.S. Sprint Speedskating Championships.

Witty, of West Allis, Wis., and FitzRandolph of Verona, Wis., swept the races both days at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee. Their performance was reminiscent of the way Bonnie Blair and Dan Jansen used to dominate U.S. speedskating competition before they retired from the sport.

Witty took the women’s 500 in 40.60 seconds and the 1,000 in 1:20.74. Her time in the 500 was nearly a second faster than second-place Becky Sundstrom of Glen Ellyn, Ill.

FitzRandolph skated personal bests in the 500 (36.76) and the 1,000 (1:14.52) to finish off his weekend sweep.

At Calgary, Alberta, Kevin Overland broke teammate Sylvain Bouchard’s one-day-old world record on by winning the 1,000 meters in the Canadian long-track speedskating championships. Overland, 21, won in 1 minute, 12.19 seconds, bettering the mark of 1:12.27 set Friday by Sylvain Bouchard.
