Garbage Truck Crushes Sleeping Woman’s Legs
A 61-year-old transient lost both her legs below the knee Wednesday after being run over by a garbage truck as she lay sleeping in a downtown alley, officials said.
Vera Allgood was listed in satisfactory condition at Harborview Medical Center after undergoing surgery on her legs, said hospital spokesman Larry Zalin.
Allgood was sleeping between two trash bins, covered with blankets and boxes, in the alley between Third and Fourth Avenues and Lenora, police spokeswoman Christie-Lynne Bonner said.
The truck driver thought the mound was overflowing debris and apparently didn’t see the woman, Bonner said.
He realized he had hit someone when he got out and saw her moving.
Police questioned the man but he was not cited.
