In College Station, Texas, after talking things over with his family and Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum, junior running back Leeland McElroy announced he has decided to enter the 1996 NFL draft.

“This was a win-win situation for me and I’ve made the decision I feel is in my best interest,” McElroy said.

McElroy was an Associated Press first-team All-America player this season as an all-purpose back. He finished with 1,122 yards rushing in 10 games. He was unable to play in the Aggies’ 22-20 victory over Michigan in Thursday’s Alamo Bowl because of a sprained ankle.

In Birmingham, Ala., a former professor at North Alabama has sued the school president, claiming he was fired in part because he exposed possible NCAA rules violations in the football program, which won three straight Division II championships.

Dr. Fred Alexander filed suit in federal court in Birmingham seeking damages related to his dismissal in April 1993. Alexander claims in the lawsuit he was fired after pointing out discrepancies in the school’s awarding of financial aid to athletes.
