Calvary Celebrating 105th Anniversary
Calvary Baptist Church, E203 Third, will celebrate its 105th anniversary with a no-host buffet tonight and a guest speaker at its 10:45 a.m. worship service Sunday, followed by a special service at 3.
Calvary - the oldest black church in Washington state, say church officials - was founded with 12 members in 1890 under the leadership of the Rev. J.P. Brown.
The first members met for two years at Fourth and Pines, said Deacon Manuel Brown. The congregation held services in three other neighborhood sites before the current property was bought in 1921. But it would be another six years before ground-breaking ceremonies marked the beginning of the present building.
From the dozen members who began Calvary, the congregation has grown to 200, said the Rev. C.W. Andrews, present pastor.
Keynote speaker at Sunday’s 3 o’clock service will be Mona Lake Jones, a Spokane native, author, teacher and now Seattle’s poet laurette.
The no-host banquet will be at 5 tonight at the Old Country Buffet, N5505 Division.
The public is invited to all events.
Seminars on fulfilled prophecies
The Suncrest Family Worship Center, Highway 295 at Wylie in Nine Mile Falls, begins a series of seminars titled, “What in the World is Happening?”
Donna C. Meier will lead the sessions from 6-7:30 p.m. beginning tonight and continuing until all topics have been covered.
Facts, both biblical and current news periodicals, will be used to present prophecy that has been or is being fulfilled, a spokesman said.
Some of the subjects to be discussed are: “How it all began and who is in control?” “How did evil invade God’s perfect planet?” “The day Russia nearly disappears!,” “Seven very uncomfortable years are ready to begin!” and “Heaven ain’t all white with harps ‘n clouds!”
