Big Nine Dominates Aaa Tourney

Moses Lake and Davis of Yakima flexed their muscles Friday during the opening round of the Region IV-AAA Tournament at Central Valley.

Moses Lake, the defending champion, advanced eight wrestlers into today’s semifinals and scored an eveninghigh 48 points. Davis kept close, with seven into the semis and 44.5 points.

The Big Nine Conference dominated as it sent 30 into the semis, eight more than the Greater Spokane League.

Mead made the biggest splash for GSL teams, scoring a third-best 38 and pushing through to the semis six of its seven competitors.

Rogers is in fifth place, with 23 points. GSL champ University fell flat, scoring just 21 points and losing seven of its 10 opening matches.

All No. 1 seeds won except U-Hi’s Jared Osborn at 101 pounds. Osborn lost 6-1 to Scott Jones of Davis, who placed sixth at state last year while at Class AA Toppenish.

At 135, Mead’s top-seeded James Clark topped Ramon Iniques of Wenatchee on a criteria. The match was tied at 4-4 after overtime.

CV’s Rick Giampietri (158) earned a 15-5 major decision over Kevin Taylor of Davis, who was fifth at state last year.

CLASS AA: At Selah, East Valley pushed four wrestlers into today’s semifinals and stands in fourth place after one round of the Region IV Tournament.

No. 1 seed Troy Campbell (148), plus Justin Walker (108), Casey Stookey (122) and Jason Moody (190) won matches for EV, which scored 24.

Tournament favorite Othello leads with 38, while runner-up Ellensburg scored 33. Both teams sent six into the semis.

Fifth-place Pullman scored 23 and sent four into the semis, including No. 1 seeds Kazuo Yoshiura (141), Kyle Ryan (168) and Earl Eastman (275). The only No. 1 seed to drop an opener was Pullman’s Bill Hinz, who lost to Greg Singer of Ellensburg 4-2.

Colville is in ninth place with 19 points, one ahead of Frontier League champion West Valley, which scored 18.

CLASS A/B: At Chelan, District 7-A/B champ Lakeside took a narrow lead heading into today’s finals.

After the first round, the Eagles have seven in the semifinals, including No. 1 seeds Chad Drury (122), Ben Orth (129) and Nate Bohl (135). The Eagles scored 43, one more than top-ranked and tournament favorite Cashmere.

Cashmere and third-place Tonasket (36.5 points) also have seven wrestlers in the semis. Northeast A champ Riverside and Deer Park have four wrestlers apiece in the semis. Riverside (29.5) is in fourth.
