Riverside Whips Depleted Chewelah
NEA
Winning on the road in the Northeast A League is difficult in the best of circumstances. Without your leading scorer, as the Chewelah Cougars found out Friday night at Riverside, it’s impossible.
The Rams held Jeremy Landram to only five points - he came in leading the NEA at 19.1 per game - and hung tough down the stretch for a 67-61 victory that gave them the league championship.
It also gave Riverside a first-round bye in the district tournament which begins next Friday. Chewelah dropped into a second-place tie with Medical Lake and will meet the Cardinals tonight at 7:30 in Deer Park. The winner will get the other first-round bye and the loser plays a loser-out game at home on Friday against No. 6 Newport.
Riverside (13-3, 15-4) led 37-35 midway in the third period when the Rams went on a 10-1 run that ended with 22 seconds left in the period.
The Cougars (11-5, 14-6) had it down to eight early in the fourth, but a banked-in 3-pointer by Rams scoring leader Keith Cook steered Riverside in the right direction.
Cook finished with 21 points, including 14 in the first half. He scored six as the Rams ran to a 12-4 lead in the game’s first 5 minutes. They were 7 for 11 from the field on their way to a 17-12 first-period lead.
Cook shot 8-for-11 from the field and added seven assists. Kasey Ahrens had 15 points and Kevin Kuntz had 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
Chewelah’s Chris Boone and Jeremy Rogers each scored 14 points and Boone had eight rebounds, but the Cougars made only 4 of 20 3-point attempts and shot 37 percent from the field to Riverside’s 55.
