Burton’s Burst Busts Stanford
Pac-10
Arizona State guard Isaac Burton wasn’t worried when he missed three of his first five field-goal attempts.
As do most streak shooters, Burton knew it was a matter of time before he would start scoring.
Burton scored 14 of his game-high 19 points in the second half as 14thranked Arizona State (8-3, 18-5) beat 15th-ranked Stanford 79-70 in Pacific-10 Conference basketball action Saturday at Tempe, Ariz. The Cardinal fell to 6-5, 15-5.
Burton made 4 of 5 field-goal attempts in the second half, including a pair of 3-pointers.
“The shots didn’t fall in the first half, but I knew that they would fall in the second half, and they did,” Burton said.
Before Burton made his shots, he had to get back into the game. Burton went to the bench after committing his fourth foul with 7:11 to play. But while he sat, Burton was more concerned with his defense than his offense.
Stanford guard Dion Cross took advantage of Burton’s absence, hitting a 3-pointer to cut Arizona State’s lead to 58-53 with 6:38 to go.
“I went to the bench frustrated,” Burton said. “I knew if I wasn’t on him, he’d get free somehow.”
Stanford, which lost its sixth straight game in Tempe, pulled to 64-61 on Andy Poppink’s layup with 3:17 remaining. But Burton made his third 3-pointer to secure the victory for Arizona State, the Sun Devils’ fifth straight.

Kenya Wilkins scored 18 points and Henry Madden 16 as the Ducks (6-4, 14-5) romped to a victory over the Beavers (3-7, 6-13) at Eugene, giving Oregon its first season sweep of Oregon State since 1961.
The 107 points were the most for the Ducks in a Pac-10 game and their most in any contest since they scored 116 against Villanova in the 1974-75 season.
Oregon jumped to a 24-14 lead, was up by 15 at halftime and led by as many as 26 in the second half.
Oregon State was never closer than 14 points in the second half.
Oregon shot .625 from the field for the game and had six players in double figures.
Oregon State’s Mustapha Hoff, the No. 3 scorer in the Pac-10, was held to a season-low 10 points.
The last time Oregon swept a season series from the Beavers, 34 years ago, was also the last time the Ducks made it to the NCAA Tournament. Oregon won both conference games from the Beavers in 1975-76 but lost to Oregon State in the Far West Classic.
Oregon State coach Jim Anderson, who has been involved in this “Civil War” series for 37 years as a player, assistant coach and head coach, fumed about his team’s poor effort.
“You have to concentrate and react and be disciplined and organized,” Anderson said. “When we run into anything that’s a little bit different, we don’t handle it very well. We’re going to continue to do this until some of our players step up front and take on the responsibility of doing it.”

Washington 83, Southern Cal 73
Bryant Boston scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Huskies (2-9, 6-13) over the Trojans (2-9, 7-14) at Seattle.
Boston knows what it’s going to take if the Huskies are going to win more games.
“I’m the player we look to to score our points,” Boston said. “It’s up to me to get the job done.”
“Bryant took big shots and he hit big shots,” Washington coach Bob Bender said. “He has accepted the pressure of being our go-to guy.”
Washington broke a five-game losing streak and handed the Trojans their seventh defeat in a row. The Huskies now have won one more game than they won last season.
Southern California’s seven-game losing streak is the longest for the school since the Trojans lost 13 in a row in the 1988-89 season.
Boston, a 6-foot-2 junior guard who is Washington’s leading scorer, bettered his previous best scoring performance of 25 points in an overtime loss at Arizona State on Feb. 2.
“I didn’t start out shooting many 3s at the start of the season, but now I’ve got a lot more confidence,” Boston said.
The Huskies, who lost 79-65 at Southern Cal on Jan. 14, took a 16-3 lead in the game’s first 5:17, scoring 14 unanswered points that included three Boston baskets and two Mark Sanford 3-pointers.
Washington never trailed after coming back, leading 41-26 at halftime. Boston scored 15 of his points in the opening half on 7-for-8 shooting.
But the Trojans stayed within striking distance in the second half and trailed 73-65 with 1:48 left after a free throw by Lorenzo Orr. The Huskies broke it open by scoring five points in a row, two free throws by Jamie Booker, a Boston dunk after he made a steal at halfcourt and a Jason Hamilton free throw for a 78-65 lead with 1:09 remaining.
Boston scored 21 points against the Trojans in the teams’ game last month.
The Huskies played without starters Michael McClain and Mike Amos.
McClain, Washington’s point guard, was suspended this week for Washington’s final 10 games after he was charged with assaulting Rhonda Smith, the starting center on the Washington women’s basketball team. The 6-foot-9 Amos, the Huskies’ center, missed the Southern Cal game because of a sore right ankle.
