No. 2 Beats No. 1
Andre Agassi, shaking off only his second loss in 33 sets played this year, turned back Michael Chang 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to capture the San Jose Open at San Jose, Calif.
Agassi is 8-2 lifetime against Chang, last losing to him in 1993 at Cincinnati. They had never before faced each other in a tournament final.
Agassi has won both tournaments he has entered this year, following up the Australian Open title he captured in January.
At Marseille, France, Boris Becker won the 43rd pro title of his career, beating Czech Daniel Vacek 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 7-5 in the final of the $506,000 Marseille Open.
Magdalena Maleeva, not originally scheduled to play the Ameritech Cup at Chicago, used her passing shots and an effective mix of power and placement to beat Lisa Raymond 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) and earn her fourth career WTA Tour title.
