U-Hi Gymnasts Enjoy Highest Finish

Greater Spokane League champion University reached new heights Friday night, finishing fifth in the team portion of the Class AAA state gymnastics meet at the Tacoma Dome is its best yet. Last year, the Titans finished seventh.

Central Valley also had its highest finish, placing sixth among the eight schools.

Individually, U-Hi’s Kim Meyers advanced to today’s individual competition by placing seventh on the beam. She just missed qualifying on the vault and bars, finishing 11th and 12th, respectively. She finished seventh in the all-around finish (35.6 points).

The top 10 in the individual events advanced to finals today.

Farrah Fabien from Newport of Bellevue won the all-around competition with 36.7 points, leading the Knights to their second-straight team title. Kamiakin’s Dana Riste finished second with a 36.6.

U-Hi’s Kalie Cossette made the finals in the floor exercises and vault. CV’s Lindsey Linerud also made the vault finals.

Whitworth women win

The Whitworth women finished first in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges Swimming Championships, 50 points ahead of second-place Pacific Lutheran.

The men finished in third place behind Linfield and Pacific Lutheran.

The Whitworth women set a 200-medley relay record and Desire DeSoto broke the meet record that she had set in the 100-meter backstroke in 1994.

Cougars fall to 2-5

Junior shortstop Mike Abernathy drilled a 1-0 pitch over the left-field wall to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night to send the University of Pacific (6-4) to a 6-5 non-conference victory over Washington State (2-5).

Brannan leads qualifers

Gabe Brannan qualifed first in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly in preliminary events Friday at the Washington state Class AA-A boys swimming tournament in Federal Way, Wash.
