Job Training Programs

Building Bridges to Employment is one of several Inland Northwest programs aimed at moving people off welfare and into the work place. The Washington Department of Social and Health Services and Idaho Department of Health and Welfare also contract with the following agencies to provide jobs training and employment assistance for the needy:

Community Action Center, 105 W. Main, Pullman. Contact: Lori Howard, 509-334-9147. Provides clerical and computer work experience for geographically isolated clients. Serves 25 people a year with a goal of placing 15 in the work place.

Crawford Health Care Management, N200 Mullan Road. Contact: Tom Polsin or Robert Aieta, 928-3301. Provides classes to assist disabled, veterans and welfare recipients to overcome obstacles to employment. Serves 75 people, with a goal of placing 60.

Goodwill Industries, E130 Third. Contact: Nadine VanStone or Sara Klinzman, 838-4246 ext 566 or 562. Provides work experience to disabled, high school graduates and welfare recipients. Serves 52 people a year, with a goal of placing 35.

Idaho Work Experience, Idaho Department of Employment, 1221 W. Ironwood Drive, Suite 200. Contact: Char Shabazian or Sharlee Mikelson, 208-769-1558. Places clients with state and nonprofit agencies for work experience. No employment goal.

Institute for Extended Learning, N4410 Market. Contact: Karen Rahlston, 533-8550. Prepares mildly mentally disabled and welfare recipients for employment. Serves 24 people, with a goal of placing 10.

North Idaho College, 1000 W. Garden Ave. Allen Johnson, 208-769-3450. Prepares clients for work through educational programs. No employment goal.

NOVA Enterprises, N3808 Sullivan Road, #10. Contact: Jeanne Loy and Paula Morgan, 928-1588 or 891-5935. Retrains physically and mentally disabled and welfare recipients. Serves 50 people, with a goal of placing 37.

Pre-Vocational Training Center, N2517 Ruby. Contact: Jody Nilles or Heather Parker, 326-6760 or 327-9134. Provides training to welfare recipients in telemarketing, offset printing, janitorial, office clerk and landscaping. Serves 40 people, with a goal of placing 30.

Single Parent Outreach Internship Project, W829 Broadway. Contact: Francie Stoll or Linda Bice, 235-5001 or 533-2417. Places single parents in local businesses, schools and agencies for work experience. Serves 40 people, with a goal of placing 26.
