Calipari Takes A Stand

Compiled From Wire Services

Massachusetts coach John Calipari extended the suspension of Mike Williams for the rest of the season, likely ending the senior guard’s college career and damaging the title hopes of the No. 5 Minutemen.

“This is one of the hardest things I’ve had to do as a coach,” Calipari said. “Coaching is about teaching life skills, not just basketball.”

Williams’ forte at UMass was shooting in the clutch. He hit winning shots in six games and sent a seventh into overtime. Williams was averaging 12.6 points, 3.4 assists and 26.3 minutes a game this season.

Sources say Williams was suspended for missing a team breakfast Feb. 14 and violating a curfew during the team’s trip to Southwestern Louisiana.
