Bombs Aboard Train Kill 26 Indian Soldiers
Two bombs exploded early Saturday in a train car reserved for the military, killing at least 26 Indian soldiers and wounding more than 30 others.
The explosions occurred in Assam state, 1,500 miles east of New Delhi, and Naga tribe guerrillas seeking independence in nearby Nagaland state were suspected.
“There are definite clues that the Naga militants are involved in the incident,” said K. Rudra, Assam state police chief.
“Some militants boarded the train and planted time bombs in the coach before escaping,” Rudra told the Press Trust of India news agency.
The soldiers were returning from neighboring Manipur state after helping local authorities conduct legislative elections.
Rebels of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland, a Maoist group, have been fighting the Indian army for more than 40 years.
