Journey Of Faith Palate Shock

Among the jolts Russian-speaking refugees feel when they move to America is a bit of palate shock. Three refugees said American food, while plentiful, takes some getting used to.

“The bread is too sweet,” said one woman, whose mother bakes Russian-style bread in Spokane.

“Sometimes, fish has no taste here,” another said. Her family likes pickled herring best.

“I do not like the beers my husband enjoys very much,” said another woman.
