Weather Hampers Blair
Emese Hunyady of Austria won the women’s 1,000-meter race at a World Cup speedskating meet that was troubled by freezing rain and snow. Olympic champion Bonnie Blair caught the slowest track conditions and finished 13th.
The men’s 500-meter sprints, for the second straight day, turned into a Japanese festival with a few non-Japanese also-rans. As on Saturday, Hiroyasu Shimizu took first place, clocking 36.57 seconds. His countrymen Junichi Inoue and Manabu Horii were second and third, as they finished on Saturday.
Freezing rain hit as the women’s 1,000-meter racing was under way, and favorites such as Blair, who had won both her 500-meter races on Friday and Saturday, raced when the outdoor track was at its slowest and she struggled for 13th place.
