Tennessee Women Gain

Compiled From Wire Services

Tennessee chopped away at Connecticut’s lead in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll.

While the Huskies remained solidly entrenched at No. 1, Tennessee received four first-place votes - two more than last week - and trailed by 24 points. The other 28 first-place votes from a nationwide media panel all went to Connecticut, which led by as many as 33 points earlier.

Connecticut had 796 points and Tennessee 772. Colorado was third with 718.

University of Washington ranks 16th. Washington State, which upset UW last Saturday, received one vote.

The 1995 U.S. Pan American women’s basketball team will be led by three members of last year’s bronze medal World Championship team, USA Basketball announced in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Carla McGhee, Dawn Staley, Sheryl Swoopes and nine others were picked for the U.S. Pan American team after three days of trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Other squad members include former Washington standout Karen Deden of Missoula.
