China Uses Tear Gas To Disperse Rioters

Compiled From Wire Services

Security officers in southern China fired tear gas to disperse 500 peasants who rioted over the confiscation of land.

Hong Kong press reports said the violence flared Saturday in the Special Economic Zone of Zhuhai when the peasants gathered outside a government office to protest inadequate compensation over the sale of their land for commercial development.

An undetermined number of people were injured in the disturbance, which lasted about six hours, the reports said.
