Top-seeded Stefan Edberg, the defending champion, needed only 44 minutes to beat Karim Alami 6-1, 6-1 in the Qatar Open tennis tournament in Doha, Qatar.

Edberg will meet Henri Leconte, who downed Javier Sanchez 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in today’s semifinals. In the other quarterfinals, Michael Stich beat Jan Siemerink 6-3, 6-1, and Magnus Larsson beat Marcus Zoecke 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-3.

Third-seeded Jim Courier advanced to the finals of the Australian Hardcourt tournament with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Thomas Enqvist in Adelaide, Australia. Courier will play local favorite Mark Woodforde, who upset top-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov 6-3, 7-5, for the title.
