Pirates Clobber Lutes

Women’s basketball

The Whitworth Pirates women’s basketball team used a balanced offensive scoring attack and took advantage of bad shooting by Pacific Lutheran to blast the Lutes 78-49 Saturday night at the Whitworth College Fieldhouse.

The Pirates (1-0 Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges, 6-9 overall) raced to a 37-19 halftime lead and were never threatened.

The Lutes (0-2, 6-7) shot just 22 percent from the floor in the first half.

“I’m happy with the win, but there were certain times in the game in which I felt like we got away from some of the things I wanted them to do,” Pirates head coach Helen Higgs said.

“Anytime you hold a team to 19 points in the first half, you’ve got to be impressed with the defense, but 15 turnovers is just too much,” Higgs said.
