George Petticrew Lakeside Year: Soph. Sport: Basketball Position: Wing
George Petticrew ran head-on into a slump and decided to stop shooting so much.
His teammates had different ideas. Their opinions won out.
Petticrew made four 3-pointers and scored 18 points Saturday as Lakeside toppled Class A topranked Medical Lake 54-39.
Petticrew, who had scored just 16 points in his previous three Northeast A League games, had 10 points in the fourth quarter against the Cardinals (8-1).
“(Medical Lake) went to a zone (defense) and I just found the open spots, I guess,” said the Eagles sophomore.
Petticrew handed all the credit to his fellow Nine Milers, who told him to forget any recent shots that had missed the mark.
“We just played as a team, passed the ball around, and everybody contributed,” he said.
Petticrew, who moved to the Lakeside district two years ago from north Spokane, played junior varsity last year. He drew a starting assignment this year from new coach Kevin Mulligan.
Lakeside’s up-and-down season (7-3 overall) can be attributed to team discord that has been dissipated in clear-the-air sessions, Petticrew said.
“It was kind of like a senior/ sophomore thing, but we’re kind of over it now,” Petticrew said.
