Jerry Richardson resigned as chief executive of Flagstar Cos. Inc. Thursday after guiding its Denny’s restaurant chain through claims of racial discrimination.

Richardson will remain Flagstar chairman, but said he wanted to devote more time to his professional football franchise - the Carolina Panthers.

James B. Adamson, Burger King Corp.’s chief executive, will succeed Richardson.
