Jones Boots WSU In Favor Of Seattle And The Huskies
Randy Jones, Ferris’ recordbreaking field goal kicker, said Monday night he would accept a football scholarship from the University of Washington.
The official signing date is Feb. 1.
Jones picked the Huskies over Washington State.
“I got the overall feeling that was the place for me,” Jones said. “The city, the coaches, everything fit perfectly.”
Jones kicked a Greater Spokane League-record 59-yard field goal last season and was named the all-league kicker and punter. In his two years kicking for the Saxons, he had a halfdozen field goals of more than 50 yards.
He was also an all-league wide receiver after leading the GSL in catches as a junior. He said the Huskies might give him an opportunity to catch passes, too.
“I talked a lot with the wide receivers’ coach; they’re leaving the door open for receiving,” Jones said. “It wasn’t extremely important, but it’s definitely exciting.”
The final decision was between UW and Washington State, although he considered Stanford and CaliforniaBerkeley.
“I didn’t make a choice to limit it to the two Washington schools … but I realized I wanted to stay close to home,” he said. “I guess I’m not much of a California person. I liked WSU a lot, but I liked UW a little better.”
