In its fourth week of release, “Legends of the Fall” starring Brad Pitt finished first at the box office over the holiday weekend with $14 million, topping two new films including John Singleton’s “Higher Learning.”

“Legends of the Fall,” which co-stars Aidan Quinn and Anthony Hopkins, moved to the top of the chart in its first week of wide release after three weeks at a limited number of locations. “Higher Learning” is the third film directed by Singleton, whose other credits are “Boyz N The Hood” and “Poetic Justice.”

Of new films in release, “Tales from the Crypt Presents Demon Knight” opened well but “Far From Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog” did not.

“Nobody’s Fool” was strong as it moved to more cities and “Dumb and Dumber” closed in on the $100 million mark. Susan Sarandon’s “Safe Passage” disappeared after a month of release and “Speechless” continued to free-fall after five weeks.
