Tom Purtzer and Phil Mickelson, former Arizona State golfers who live in Scottsdale, turned the Northern Telecom Open into a college reunion Thursday, shooting 7-under-par 65s to share the first-round lead.

Howard Twitty shot a 66 and was alone in third in the 156-player field. Kirk Triplett of Pullman fired a 70.

Purtzer ignited his round with an eagle3 on the second hole and played the rest of the way without a bogey.

Mickelson needed a 4-foot birdie putt on the last hole to get a share of the lead.
