Eagles Make UI Give Up
The Eastern Washington University Eagles got their first Big Sky Conference win of the season Saturday night at Reese Court against Idaho, 69-59.
The win snaps the Eagles’ (1-2, 5-10) two-game losing streak. The Vandals (0-3, 2-13) dropped their fourth straight.
Idaho took a 2-0 lead, and it was the only lead it would hold all night. The Eagles went on an 18-2 run and never looked back.
The Vandals managed to put together a little run to close to 18-13, but in what seemed like the blink of an eye, EWU built a 30-19 lead.
The quick Eastern start was aided by the play of junior Resa Watterson.
Coming into the game averaging 7.6 points, Watterson finished with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting. In the first half, EWU made 16 of 32 field goals.
“The shots were open for me,” Watterson said. “After losing both games last weekend, we were really excited to come out and play well.”
EWU coach Heidi VanDerveer was pleased.
“We played together, we played unselfish, we were excited and we executed,” VanDerveer said. “In order to make it last, though, we have to do it consistently.”
EWU contributed to Idaho’s woes as the Eagles did a defensive number on Vandals center Mindy Rice.
Though Rice led all scorers with 19 points before fouling out, the double and triple teams EWU applied took her out of any offensive rhythm early. The majority of her points came when the outcome had pretty much been determined.
The last 3:44 of the game summed up what this season has amounted to for Idaho.
After a timeout, the Vandals, trailing 61-46, managed to cut the lead to 67-59 with 37 seconds remaining.
While EWU wasn’t about to collapse in that short period of time, some of the Idaho players seemed to have given up.
“That’s correct,” Idaho coach Julie Holt said. “But it wasn’t just limited to the end of the game. I’m not going to say much right now because I’m not happy with the way my team played, and I don’t want to get in trouble.
“But we didn’t play hard for 40 minutes,” Holt said. “I don’t have a problem with mistakes. But I have a problem when people don’t play hard.”
Thursday and Saturday, Eastern will host Northern Arizona and Weber State with 7 p.m. tip-off times. The Vandals will host the same teams on opposite nights at Memorial Gym, also at 7.
