O’Brien Doubles Up At Ewu
Dan O’Brien, world-record holder in the decathlon, was a double winner Saturday at Eastern Washington University’s Early Bird Invitational track and field indoor meet at Cheney.
O’Brien took the men’s shot put with a throw of 50 feet, 1 inches, and the 55-meter hurdles in 7.32 seconds. He was also fourth in the high jump at 6-7. Former Washington State high jumper Brent Harken won at 6-9.
EWU’s Jeramie Willingham was a winner in the men’s long jump (23-5) and triple jump (47-7).
Seville Broussard met the NCAA provisional qualifying height in the high jump, and also won the 55 hurdles as she made a successful debut for the host Eagles.
Broussard, a freshman out of Walla Walla High, jumped 5-10 in the high jump to exceed the provisional qualifying standard by three-fourths of an inch.
Broussard’s hurdle time of 8.31 was .11 away from the EWU school record.
EWU’s Taneka Sauls set a school women’s record with a triple jump of 34-7, and won the 400 in 1:00.12.
WSU’s Jeanna Hall, of Mead High, won the shot with a throw of 39-6. She also won the 20-pound weight toss, an exhibition event, with a mark of 37-8.
The Cougars’ Kolleen Faires won the triple jump with a mark of 36-0 and Chanelle Anderson took the long jump with a mark of 17-10.
Wrestling
Jason Haven of Clarkston won the 160-pound title and his Bantams finished third at the Clearwater Classic at Lewiston.
Travis Ball finished second at 145 for Clarkston, which compiled 148 points. The host Bengals scored 226 and runner-up Sandpoint 154.
Pullman took seventh place with 92.5 points. The Greyhounds’ Kazuo Yoshiura lost in the 140-pound finals.
Girls basketball
Linsay Porter made a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter and visiting East Valley (3-10) used a 20-9 scoring edge from the free-throw line to top Post Falls 46-40 in a nonleague game.
Heidi Umthun of Post Falls (7-13) scored 21 on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor.

Hockey
Mike Beech scored in the final minute - despite Spokane’s protest that he was offsides - as the Sicamous (British Columbia) Eagles (30-4) defeated the visiting Braves 6-5 in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League game.
Spokane (9-18-2) led 5-4 with 2:24 remaining before Brian L’Henaff tied the game and Beech notched the disputed winner. Ryan Oscar, Ryan Shipley, Tyler Herron and Darin Talotti scored second-period goals for the Braves.
