At a glance

The reunion angle of this one will be downplayed if Hurricanes scoring leader Mark Szoke (elbow) sits out. Szoke (35 goals, 29 assists) played two seasons in Spokane prior to his ‘92 trade to Lethbridge. Ex-Chiefs Townsend and Smadis are also key Hurricanes - Smadis the starter in goal, Townsend the captain. Townsend has an 11-game scoring streak. Smadis beat the Chiefs on Nov. 4 when he was with the Brandon Wheat Kings. He had a stronger support group then. Chiefs coach Mike Babcock has turned around his oncewoeful Chiefs, who are on a club-record seven-game win streak with a shot at an unprecedented sweep in this fourgame trip through Alberta. Two players who haven’t attracted a lot of attention are Whitfield and Dmitri Leonov, injured early in the season and finally back to full strength. “With their quickness they spread us out and make us better,” Babcock said.
