Bear Habitat Protection Delayed
Idaho Fish and Game Department officials have ordered a 30-day delay in grizzly habitat protection measures, including closing 125 miles of roads in the Selkirk Mountains.
According to Wayne Wakkinen, wildlife research biologist for the department, the action postpones the signing of documents next week that would have made the changes final.
At issue is the proposed closure of roads that would limit motorized access for recreation and logging. The delay will allow that and other options to be reconsidered.
A study by the Priest Lake Ranger District proposing several alternatives was released in August 1994. The study covers 85,000 acres in the Selkirk Mountains in both Idaho and Washington.
