Wachter’s A Winner

Compiled From Wire Services

Anita Wachter skied to an easy victory in the World Cup giant slalom. The 27-year-old Austrian, whose time was 2 minutes, 34.41 seconds, didn’t win by that much, but the margin of 89-hundredths of a second devastated the field.

Wachter’s season got off to a poor start, but she has gradually gained momentum by winning a World Cup super-G and finishing second in a giant slalom earlier in the month.

Vreni Schneider’s time of 2:35.30 was the only racer within a second of Wachter. Slovenia’s Spela Pretnar finished third, more than 2 seconds behind the leader.
