Banquet needed publicity

There wasn’t much in the sports section of your paper regarding the dinner and awards banquet that was held at the Spokane Club on Monday evening Jan. 16.

The program was sponsored by the Inland Northwest Chapter of the N.F.F. and College Hall of Fame to recognize and honor fine high school football players who also were top scholars and leaders.

Ten inland empire players were chosen from a list of players turned in by their coaches from this area. The group consisted of five backs and five linemen who were presented with plaques. One of the 10 had been chosen as the most outstanding football player and he was presented the Ray Flaherty Football Trophy award.

Jim Walden, former coach at Washington State, made the presentations and followed with an excellent talk.

As this was the first year of the Inland Northwest Chapter’s activities, they sure could have used some publicity from The Spokesman-Review. Jim Barber Spokane

Keep that license dry

To all the people that fish in Washington: Beware! Your fishing license appears to be made of a rigid toilet paper. If your license gets wet, it forms a ball of mush that is virtually irreparable. Which is convenient for the fish and wildlife department that will then charge you $10 for a replacement. I know that some of our neighboring states use a cotton paper (like our dollars), but that’s too much to ask from Washington’s fish and wildlife department. They seem to believe it’s redundant to make a fishing license that will actually stay in one piece if it ever gets wet. If you think you might get wet while fishing, you better have access to a good laminator. Eric S. Berg Spokane, WA
