Smoke From Jet Engine Forces Evacuation

Compiled From Wire Services

A jet engine started smoking after the plane landed at the airport Monday, forcing the evacuation of 116 passengers.

The passengers slid down the emergency chute, one suffered a minor ankle injury, airport spokeswoman Carole Martin said.

The pilot of Delta Flight 1149 from Atlanta reported seeing smoke coming from the plane’s tail, but no fire was found.

The plane is an MD-80, a twin-engine with the jets at the rear of the plane.
