Colfax Also Speed Bump

Eric Sorensen

When this town isn’t laboring under the reputation of being America’s biggest speed trap, it’s known as the biggest speed bump in the Palouse.

Sitting in a narrow ravine some 60 high-speed miles south of Spokane, the town and its 25 mph speed laws are well-known to Pullmanbound Washington State University football fans accustomed to hitting the brakes well before the city limits.

Much of the problem was solved in 1993 when the state added a second southbound lane from the south edge of town, ending a bottleneck that often had backed up traffic for miles. Before the change, said Police Chief Barney Buckley, the line of bumper-to-bumper traffic could stretch from downtown to Arrow Machinery nearly five miles to the north.
