Obituaries

Elmo Steinke Tumwater, Wash.

Inurnment service for Elmo L. Steinke, 88, is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Riverside Memorial Park, followed by memorial service at 2 p.m. at Spokane Masonic Temple. Woodlawn Funeral Home in Lacey, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Steinke died Thursday in Olympia.

He was born in St. John, Wash., and graduated from Cheney High School in 1924 and from Washington State University with a master’s degree in education in 1938.

He had been a school teacher and administrator in Washington state since 1926, starting in the Spokane Valley.

From 1943 until 1958 he served in Selah, Wash. He was in the teacher training program through Washington State University in Pakistan from 1958 to 1965, and from 1965 until 1972, he worked for Spokane School District 81.

He retired in 1972 and lived in Spokane until 1985, when he moved to Mesa, Ariz. He moved to Tumwater last year.

He was a member of the Methodist Church, a charter member and Gold Sheaf member of Eaton Grange in Ewan, Wash., Scottish Rite, El Katif Shrine, Lions Club, the Washington and National Education Associations, the Washington School Superintendents Association and the American Association of School Administrators.

He was also a member of the board of directors of the Inland Empire Zoological Society, the Comprehensive Health Planning Committee in Spokane, the Spokane Gladiolas Society, and helped establish the Eastern Washington Health Systems agency.

His wife, Alice Steinke, preceded him in death.

He is survived by two daughters, Estelle Glarborg of Blackfoot, Idaho, and Carol Nichols of Lacey; two sons, Ted Steinke of Milwaukee, Wis., and Max Steinke of San Jose, Calif.; two sisters, Martha Dechenne of St. John and Maxine Judd of Lacey; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Herman Goos Vallejo, Calif.

Memorial service for Herman Harold Goos, 80, was held June 25 in California.

Mr. Goos, who died June 18, was born in Washtucna, Wash.

He grew up in Spokane and Rockford, and worked for General Mills for 26 years. He retired in 1979.

He moved to Vallejo 31 years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; two daughters, Ruth Halligan and Linda Grim, both of Vallejo; three sons, Gordon Goos of Tennessee, Kenneth Goos of Vallejo and John Goos of Santa Clara, Calif.; three sisters, Mina Boren of Washougal, Wash., Martha Jones of Spokane and Anna Jahns of Rockford; two brothers, Alford Goos of Corvallis, Ore., and Ted Goos of Spokane; 12 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

Ben Pullen Spokane

No service will be held for Ben F. Pullen, 72, at his request. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Pullen died Tuesday.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and worked for Washington Water Power for 33 years. He retired in 1982.

He was a member of the Washington Water Power Trailblazers, the Model T Ford Club and the Electrical Workers Union.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Betty Pullen; two daughters, Kerry Hart and Connie Marks, both of Spokane; two sons, Randy and Tracy Pullen, both of Algona, Wash.; one sister, Lois Holmes of Clarkston; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Lois Shufelt Spokane

At her request, no service will be held for Lois Ellen Shufelt, 68. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Shufelt, who died Friday, was born in Ford City, Pa.

She had lived in Spokane since 1950 and worked as a supervisor for a beauty supply company.

She is survived by one sister, Gloria Shelden of Coeur d’Alene; and one brother, George Shufelt of Olympia.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Viola Bowers Spokane

Service for Viola V. Bowers, 71, will be at 10 a.m. today at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Everett, Mrs. Bowers died Thursday.

She had lived in Spokane for 51 years and was a waitress.

She is survived by two sons, Dennis Collinson of Cheney and Alan Collinson of Otis Orchards; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one greatgreat-grandson.

Irene Kurtz Spokane

Service for Irene N. Kurtz, 93, is planned for 1 p.m. today at Sunset Mausoleum at Fairmount Memorial Park with Pastor Brad Fanning officiating. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kurtz, who was born in Gifford, Idaho, died Thursday.

She was a self-employed piano teacher and had lived in Spokane for more than 56 years.

She is survived by three sons, Brad Fanning of Bismarck, N.D., and Gordon and Gary Fanning, both of Spokane; two daughters, Beverly Gosk and Julie Conklin, both of Spokane; one sister, Ann Lindsley of Roseburg, Ore.; one brother, John Black of Colville, Wash.; 11 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.
