Betty Phillips Honored With Golden Deed Award

Betty Phillips, a volunteer with the Crisis Pregnancy Center, was honored by the North Spokane Exchange Club with its annual Golden Deeds Award. The award is given for people in the community who unselfishly volunteer to help others. Phillips has been a volunteer receptionist with the Crisis Pregnancy Center since the center opened in 1991. She works two fourhour shifts a week and performs functions beyond normal receptionist duties.

Anthony “Tony” Seikel, assistant professor of speech and hearing sciences at Washington State University at Spokane, has been honored with the 1995 Faculty Excellence Award. He has traveled to Spokane from Pullman one to two days weekly since 1989 to support graduate instruction and research in speech and hearing sciences. He joined the WSU faculty in 1988.

Seven individuals were recently elected to serve on the Eastern Washington University Alumni Association Board of Directors. They are all EWU alumni: Mike Johnson, Oliver “Kris” Lattimore and Darwin “Jack” McManigal, all of Spokane; Allen Matsumoto, Normandy Park, Wash.; Barton Preecs, Richland; and Marie Ramos-Miller and Clarke Veach, both of Kennewick.

Several Eastern Washington University faculty and staff members were honored with special awards at the EWU Founder’s Day Convocation.

Jerry Parker, professor of chemistry/biochemistry and chair of the department, received the 1995 Trustees’ Medal.

Those awarded 1995 PTI/ PacificCorp Foundation Faculty Achievement Awards were: Nancy Birch, Paul Green, Susan Stearns, Lynn Brinckmeyer and David Jabon.

Carolyn Olafson, director of Benefit, received the 1995 Administrative Staff Distinguished Service Award. Shirley Dacey, a secretary supervisor in the Department of Psychology, received the 1995 Classified Staff Distinguished Service Award.

Sgts. Robert and Kristi Haynes, both residents of Spokane, graduated together on the Commandant’s List from the Primary Leadership Development Course in Fort Gordon, Ga. They enlisted in the Army together after becoming engaged in early 1990, then were married in October of that year. They are stationed in Augusta, Ga.

Helena (Ansotigue) Reynolds, daughter of Juan and Juanita Ansotigue, Northport, Wash., was elected 1995 president of the Washington State Association of Senior Centers. She is a graduate of Northport High School and Whitworth College and serves as Parks Program Coordinator with the City of Kent Senior Activity Center.

Kori Peters, daughter of Frank and Lori Peters, Spokane, was a page for Bob McCaslin in the state Senate for one week in April. She attended government classes for two hours a day while in Olympia, delivered messages and attended the Senate sessions. She will be a junior in the fall at University High School.

Brian Murphy, son of Sharon Murphy, Spokane, was named a recipient of the Riordan/ Educational Participation in Communities Award recently at Loyola Marymount University. He will be a senior in the fall majoring in biology.
