Wilson Stars In Title Game

Chris Wilson pitched five-hit ball as Chapter Eleven/Longhorn Barbecue of Spokane defeated the Vancouver Royals 6-0 Tuesday at Shadle Park’s Al K. Jackson Field to win the Becker Buick Fourth of July American Legion baseball Tournament championship.

Wilson, who struck out four, also batted 2 for 3 and had an RBI single in a two-run sixth inning that capped the scoring.

Steve Schaber also was 2 for 3 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs and Christian Ross drove in two runs with a third-inning double.

Vancouver advanced to the title game with a 3-2 triumph over Prairie of Post Falls. Adam Stokey’s two-run double in the sixth inning put the Royals up 3-1 and they weathered a Prairie uprising in the bottom of the seventh. Nate Dudley struck out eight in pitching a fivehitter for Vancouver.

The Richland Knights beat the Redmond Blacksox 21-5 to win the title in the Junior Legion division.

Softball

River City Rivals and the Spokane Heat were declared champions of the fifth annual 4th of July Shootout when rain washed out the finals at Franklin Park on Sunday.

Both the Rivals, a U16 team that won the U18 division, and Heat, U16 champions, had 4-0 records.

Purple Haze of Spokane, leading the Electric City Heat of Great Falls, Mont., in the U18 semifinal when rain hit, and the Lady Mavs of Helena, ahead of the Diamond Magic of Spokane in the U16 semi, were awarded second-place trophies, their opponents third place.
