Hillyard Stops Sas Without Big Hits
Rob McLauchlin went hitless but drove in three runs Wednesday as Hillyard (4-9) rose up to defeat Spokane Athletic Supply 7-4 in American Legion baseball at Central Valley.
McLauchlin walked once with the bases loaded and drove in two other runs with groundouts. Winning pitcher Shawn Carlson went 2 for 3 and stole two bases.
Jeremy Nesbitt of South Division-leading SAS (8-3) had a bases-clearing double during a four-run seventh.
Elsewhere, Jim Gewalt (1-2) scattered four hits, struck out six and pitched a complete game as Kimmel (5-5) clipped Maxwell House 1-0.
During Kimmel’s first, Robert Woodside reached on an error, moved to second on a walk and scored on Chad Johnson’s single. Maxwell House is 4-5.
Justin Tichey went 3 for 4 and Joe Andrews had an RBI triple during a six-run first as Job Quest (10-4) topped PAC 9-2.
Winner Andy Imada struck out five in four innings and James Eklund was 2 for 3 for Job Quest.
PAC (2-5) had no more luck in its late game, losing 15-7 to North Division-leading M&L Construction (8-0).
John Barneson of M&L went 4 for 5 with three runs scored and six RBIs. Barneson doubled and tripled. D.J. Funk scored three runs, and Matt Armitage and Steve Fish had two RBIs apiece for M&L.
Newt White had a two-run homer and Simmeron Hienz went 3 for 3 for PAC.
Girls basketball
Lynne Overley of Boise scored 22, and Tracy Ford of University High led the defensive effort as the Spokane Stars U-18 team defeated Arizona 72-54 at the AAU Junior Olympics tournament in Dallas.
Tricia Lamb of St. John-Endicott added 16 points for the Stars, who are down to seven players from an original roster of nine.
The team is out of championship contention.
Also at Dallas, Stacy Clinesmith of Mead scored 17 as the U-16 Stars avoided elimination by defeating the Seattle Magic 74-56.
Carmel Lampson of Kennewick, Wash., added 16 points and Andee Schmick of SJE had nine rebounds and three assists against Seattle.
Spokane opened the day with a 91-80 loss to West Texas. Lampson scored 24, Schmick added 18 points and 15 rebounds and Clinesmith had seven assists. Spokane trailed 41-35 at halftime and ran into foul trouble early in the second half.
Spokane needs to win twice today to remain in the tourney. The Stars can earn third place by winning the rest of their games.
