Where’s Nomo? Not On Espn

From Wire Reports

National League

How frustrating!

With Nomomania and the hype reaching new heights, baseball fans throughout Southern California sat down Wednesday night to watch Hideo Nomo pitch for the Dodgers against the Braves on ESPN.

But instead, they got the San Francisco and Cincinnati game until rain delayed that game, and then got the Boston and Kansas City.

What happened?

Well, someone at ESPN made a big mistake.

ESPN isn’t saying who goofed, but to the network’s credit, ESPN is admitting full responsibility.

“It was a case of someone misreading the blackout restrictions,” ESPN spokesman Rob Tobias said Thursday.

Once the mistake was recognized, the ESPN people in Bristol, Conn., had to lift the blackout from each cable system in Southern California, which took considerable time. Some systems got the telecast by the second inning or later.

DirecTV subscribers never got the game at all on their 18-inch satellite dish systems.

Atlanta

Fred McGriff’s runscoring single in the bottom of the ninth lifted Atlanta.

It was the second pitching duel between the teams in as many nights and gave Atlanta a sweep of the three-game series.

Phillies 10, Pirates 5

Left-hander David West woke up Philadelphia’s slumping offense with an unlikely three-run homer and the Phillies stopped a five-game losing streak.

Andres Galarraga and Dante Bichette each drove in two runs and Colorado rallied to beat Montreal.

Trailing 6-3, the Rockies cut the deficit on Galarraga’s two-run homer in the fifth.

Brian Jordan’s one-out single in the 12th inning drove home the winning run for St. Louis.
