Big Circus Will Pitch Tent At Broadway And Sullivan

The Carson & Barnes Circus comes to the Valley on Monday, bringing with it five rings and about 100 exotic and domestic animals.

“It’s the largest bigtop on earth,” says circus spokesman John Moss. He’s not kidding - the big tent is as long as a football field.

Highlights include zebras, giraffes, a white rhinoceros, a pygmy hippopotamus and, of course, lions, tigers and elephants.

Those pachyderms will be in the greatest abundance. The circus doesn’t hit the road without 20 of them.

There are plenty of talented bipeds in the show, too. Carson & Barnes boasts as many human performers as it does animals. This year’s stars include a team of Chinese acrobats in addition to clowns and animal tamers.

The circus sets up at the corner of Broadway and Sullivan. Shows are scheduled at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. both Monday and Tuesday. For a special no-cost performance, show up Monday at 8 a.m. and watch circus staff and a team of elephants raise the tent.

Folks can watch circus members unloading and feeding animals, too.

The event is sponsored by the Spokane Valley Rotary Club. Tickets are available at Tidyman’s Warehouse Foods locations throughout Spokane. Advance ticket prices are $8 for adults, $4 for children. For tickets at the gate, add $1.
