Driver Arrested After Late-Night Chase Moses Lake Man Was Ticketed For Driving Longer Than 10 Hours
A Washington State Patrol car blocking an intersection was hit by a semi-truck during a chase Wednesday night west of Spokane.
The driver was later arrested after the truck stopped on a dead-end street near WSP headquarters off Geiger Boulevard. No injuries were reported.
Harold L. Rhodes, 29, of Moses Lake, was booked into the Spokane County Jail for eluding police, malicious mischief, resisting arrest and obstructing an officer.
The incident began shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday when the trucker was cited at the Washington State Port of Entry from Idaho for failing to keep a current log book. He also was ticketed for staying on the road more than 10 consecutive hours, troopers said.
Rhodes was hauling a load of paper products for the DeBoer Trucking Company in Wisconsin. He was ordered to stay at the port of entry for an eight-hour break, but got back on the road and started driving west again on Interstate 90, troopers said.
Two WSP cars and a Spokane County sheriff’s car chased the truck, which was traveling about 60 mph before slowing to 35 mph on the Sunset Hill.
He finally left the highway a few miles west of the city, where a deputy and a patrol trooper tried to block the intersection of Geiger Boulevard and Grove. The truck hit the driver’s side of the WSP car while going around the blockade, causing about $5,000 damage.
The truck stopped and the driver was arrested after he turned down a dead-end road near the WSP’s Spokane headquarters, a dispatcher said.
The driver resisted and was subdued with pepper spray, troopers said.
