Contest Offers Chance To Get All Decked Out

If building a deck is on your to-do list this summer, here’s a contest you may be eligible to enter: The California Redwood Association is sponsoring a Redwood Deck Contest with categories for design pros and do-it-yourselfers.

The deck must have been built in 1995 and it must use redwood in its construction. You enter with a color photo. There’s no entry fee.

The grand prize in each category is $2,000; four other prizes of cash and merchandise will also be awarded.

Entry deadline is Sept. 15; for an entry form contact the California Redwood Association, 405 Enfrente Drive, Suite 200, Novato, CA 94949; (415) 382-0662.

Home shopping: Part of the fun of touristing in the region is browsing shops in other towns and ferreting out crafts and home decorating items created here in the Northwest. Now you don’t need to leave home to find things like handmade paper notecards enriched with bits of cattails or larkspur petals or vases made from gourds.

A Seattle gallery offers a catalog with these and other Northwest wares. For a copy, write Happ & Stanscz, 11212 Fremont Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98133-8231.

Roll up the rugs: Spring cleaning traditionally extends beyond dusting and window-washing chores, but sometimes it’s difficult to handle larger duties like shampooing carpets, especially area rugs.

A Spokane company that specializes in Oriental carpets has just installed an automatic Oriental rug washing machine, the first of its kind west of Chicago, company officials claim.

The process takes about five days for typical-size carpets. For information about the process and cost, contact the Richard Kirishian Oriental Rug Co., 220 E. Second, 624-8084.

In case you were wondering: Some of the items plumbers have removed from home sewer systems include animals - rattlesnakes, pigeons, snakes and a pit bull puppy - and, of course, jewelry. Other assorted items include false teeth, drawer knobs, veggies, tennis balls, shirts, shorts, socks, eyeglasses, and a beer can found in a church sewer line. That info comes from a survey by the Roto-Rooter folks.

Measure first: Before pounding nails in the living room wall, there are a couple of tips which could help you avoid unneeded holes:

Measure twice, using a level for best results. If you’re working with a group of pictures, arrange them on the floor first to see the best grouping. In plaster walls, pre-drill the hole to avoid cracking the wall surface.
