Zulu Chief Seeks More Independence

Associated Press

In a bid for more autonomy from President Nelson Mandela’s government, Zulu nationalist leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi called Saturday for fresh elections in the KwaZulu-Natal province.

Mandela’s African National Congress also has shown a willingness to hold new elections in the heartland of South Africa’s 8 million Zulus.

The ANC won South Africa’s first all-race elections last year at the national level but lost KwaZulu-Natal to Buthelezi’s Inkatha Freedom Party.

The province has been a battleground for Inkatha and ANC supporters over the past decade, claiming thousands of lives.

The next parliamentary elections are scheduled for 1999. It was unclear whether the remarks from Buthelezi - who serves as home affairs minister - will lead to an earlier date. South Africa has yet to establish all the ground rules for its post-apartheid state.
