Red Sox Acquire Hollins From Phils

In a deal involving two players having subpar seasons, the Boston Red Sox traded outfielder Mark Whiten to the Philadelphia Phillies for infielder Dave Hollins on Monday.
Hollins, the former Spokane Indian, who plays first base and third base, was batting .229 in 65 games. He was tied for the Phillies lead with seven homers and tied for third in the National League with 53 walks.
Hollins, who found himself on the bench for the first time since July 1991, was glad he had finally been moved.
“I am happy and relieved that somebody wanted me,” Hollins said. “It’s been a tough couple of weeks. I have no bitterness at all. The Phillies gave me a chance to play and they’ve treated me well. I think it will work out best for everybody.”
Whiten had two stints at Pawtucket of the International League, the first for rehabilitation and the second after he struggled with Boston.
In 28 games with Pawtucket, Whiten combined for a .284 average with four home runs and 13 RBIs. With the Red Sox, he hit .185 in 32 games with one homer and 10 RBIs.
Orioles seek Bonilla
The Baltimore Orioles have offered reliever Armando Benitez as enticement for a trade to get the New York Mets’ Bobby Bonilla.
No official offer involving Benitez has been made, but the Orioles are now waiting to hear from Mets general manager Joe McIlvaine to see if a deal can be reached, a source close to the negotiations told The (Baltimore) Sun.
The Orioles want Bonilla to bolster their sagging offense, and the Mets want to cut their payroll. Bonilla will earn $4.5 million next year.

Tim Wakefield won his sixth straight start and Rick Aguilera earned his second save against his former team as Boston beat Minnesota.
Wakefield (10-1), signed as a free agent April 27, struck out seven, walked one and allowed seven hits in 7-1/3 innings. Aguilera got his 18th save, including six with Boston.

New York
New York extended its winning streak to a seasonhigh six games, beating Texas on Mike Stanley’s bases-loaded single to the center-field wall with one out in the ninth inning.
Steve Howe (3-2) got the victory with an inning of relief after Texas scored four runs in the eighth inning to tie it 4-4.
Clearing the bases
Jose Lind, released by Kansas City after leaving the team because of personal problems, signed a minor league contract with the California… .
