No Early Start For Halloween High Jinks

Carla K. Johnson Staff writer

The Spokane School Board decided Wednesday it’s probably not a good idea to let students out of school two hours early on Oct. 31.

“It just gives our creative high school students more time to plan,” said board member Nancy Fike in a veiled reference to potential Halloween high jinks.

The board sent a school calendar back to District 81 officials so they can reschedule the Oct. 31 professional planning day.

The day would have meant early release for 30,000 students on Halloween.

Students will get out two hours early on eight days in the 1995-96 school year.

School staffs meet to plan and obtain training on those days, which are negotiated by union contract.

School will start Tuesday, Sept. 5, the day after Labor Day.

The last day is scheduled to be June 14.

Two weeks of winter vacation will begin Dec. 18.

Spring break will be the first week of April.

Cheney School District also will start school Sept. 5.

The three Spokane Valley districts will open Sept. 6. Deer Park and Freeman will start school Aug. 29.
