Moises Alou’s In-Laws Killed In Shootout At Family’s N.Y. Store

Compiled From Wire Services

Two of Montreal outfielder Moises Alou’s in-laws were murdered in a shootout at a Brooklyn grocery store Thursday night.

The father and brother of Alou’s wife, Austria, were shot when a gunman tried to rob Junior’s Grocery Store.

Alou’s father-in-law, store owner Peccio Melo, 54, apparently responded by drawing his own pistol, police said.

In an exchange of gunfire, Melo was hit several times in the upper body. He died at the scene.

Also struck was Alou’s brother-in-law, Julio Melo, 33, who died about an hour later at Kings County Hospital.

Police arrested Kareem Fauntleroy, 19, in connection with the shootings.

Alou learned of the news Friday morning and left Montreal with his wife for New York.

Fauntleroy was in critical but stable condition at Woodhull Hospital.

Alou is expected to miss the Expos’ next few games.
