Jesse ‘Kize’ Matlock Spokane

Service for Jesse D. “Kize” Matlock, 80, will be at 2 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Matlock died Sunday while visiting family in Anchorage, Alaska.

A lifetime Spokane resident, he was a truck driver in the construction industry.

He had served in the Army during World War II as a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Infantry Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Mr. Matlock was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 45.

His wife, Helen Matlock, died in 1993.

Survivors include one son, Robert Matlock of Anchorage; one stepdaughter, Judy Farley of Spokane; three stepsons, Raymond and Douglas White, both of Spokane, and Jack White of Medical Lake; two sisters, Marilyn Price of Tillamook, Ore., and Jo Bailey of Gold Beach, Ore., and numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association.

Viola Dart Seattle

Service for Viola Pearl Dart, 96, is planned for 1 p.m. today at Hoffner, Fisher and Harvey Chapel in Seattle.

Mrs. Dart, who died Tuesday, was born in Roanoke, Ill.

She and her husband, Harold Dart, moved to Dartford in 1923 and operated the Dart General Store and Service Station until 1953. Her husband founded Dart Truck and Tractor Co. in Colbert.

He died in 1960, and she moved to Boise in 1965. She returned to Dartford in 1975.

She was a member of the Spokane Garden Club and the Spokane Writing and Driving Club.

She moved to Seattle in 1991.

She is survived by one son, George Dart of Seattle; two sisters, Irene Butler and Helen Ellingson; one brother, Milton Jeter; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Olga Crisp Medford, Ore.

Memorial service for Olga M. Crisp, 86, is planned for 2 p.m. Monday at the Hope (Idaho) Cemetery. Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives in Medford is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Crisp, a former Spokane resident, died July 3 at Hearthstone Manor in Medford.

She was born in Cape Girardo, Mo.

She lived in Spokane from 1956 until 1974 and worked as a check filer for Old National Bank. She was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, the Corbin Senior Center and the Hobnailers Hiking Club and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She moved to Oregon six years ago.

Her husband, Orville Crisp, died in 1950.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan Wright of Medford and Gail Dickson of Renton, Wash.; a brother, Henry Niemeier of Shelley, Idaho; three grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

Warren Kempe Everett

Memorial service for Warren B. Kempe, 62, will be at 3 p.m. today at Ritzville (Wash.) Crossroads Christian Church. Purdy and Walters with Cassidy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kempe died Wednesday at Seattle Veterans Hospital.

He was born in Metaline Falls, Wash.

He owned Kempe’s Painting in Spokane for 20 years and was a resident apartment manager for 12 years.

He and his wife, Rose, moved to Everett in 1987.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Doug Kempe of Everett and Bruce Kempe of Otis Orchards; two daughters, Janet Claar of Spokane and Louise Marcus of Ritzville; one brother, Alvin Kempe of Metaline Falls; four grandsons and one granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to a local food bank.

Robert Holcomb Deer Park

Memorial service for Robert George “Bob” Holcomb, 58, is planned for 2 p.m. today at Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park.

Born in Portland, Mr. Holcomb died Tuesday.

He was a ground maintenance mechanic for United Airlines and retired in 1995.

He had served in the Navy during the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Joyce Holcomb; three sons, Mic Holcomb of Deer Park, Ben Holcomb of Oregon and Wes Holcomb of Oregon City, Ore.; four daughters, Elizabeth Holcomb of Deer Park, Lisa Niirnan of Milwaukie, Ore., and Jan McEvers and Dana Betsacon, both of Oregon City; two brothers, John Holcomb of Yuma, Ariz., and Bill Holcomb of Scappoose, Ore.; and 10 grandchildren.

Nadine Magnuson Spokane

Memorial service for Nadine Magnuson, 77, is set for 10 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.

Mrs. Magnuson, who died Wednesday, was born in Spokane.

She graduated from North Central High School and worked at Galena Air Base from 1941 to 1945. She worked as a secretary for Portec from 1961 until 1975. She was also a voter registrar.

She is survived by two sons, Philip Magnuson of Seattle and Sheldon Magnuson of Elk; one sister, Dorothy Thompson of Spokane; one brother, L.A. Wells of Spokane; four grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or the Arthritis Foundation.

Ruth Broom Spokane

Graveside service for Ruth Mable Brown, 82, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Eureka (Mont.) Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Broom, who died Wednesday, was born in Brewster, Wash.

She had lived in Spokane for more than 30 years and worked at The Bon Marche and The Crescent department stores.

Her husband, William Broom, died in 1962.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty Mae McKean of Missoula; and three grandsons.

Johnna Albi Marshfield, Mass.

Memorial service for Johnna M. Albi, 49, was held in Marshfield. Family memorial Mass will be held in Spokane.

Ms. Albi, who was born in Spokane, died May 9 from breast cancer.

She graduated from Holy Names Academy and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Colorado.

She received a teacher’s certificate from the National Gourmet Foods Institute in New York. She had attended Gonzaga University in Florence, Italy, and taught Italian at the University of Colorado for six years.

She had also worked as an office manager for dental offices and for a major food store chain in Spokane and in Boulder, Colorado.

For the past 12 years, she had operated the Natural Foods Cookery and the Wizard’s Table Catering in the Boston area. She had recently written and illustrated a book on cooking greens.

She is survived by her husband of 17 years, Louis Vanrenen; one son and one daughter, Gabriel and Ariana Vanrenen, both at home; her parents John and Muriel Albi of Spokane; and one sister, Kathleen Albi of Denver. She is also survived by two aunts who helped raise her, Olga Dobelstein of Spokane and Evelyn Albi of Denver.

Carl Hansen Spokane

No service will be held for Carl L. Hansen, 57, at his request. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hansen, who died July 18, was born in Mayfield, Utah.

He worked for Boyles Bros. Drilling Co. from when he was 16 until 1988, when he retired.

He also served in the Army for two years.

Mr. Hansen became a permanent Spokane resident in 1974 after traveling for his job in Utah and Nevada.

He is survived by his wife, Rae Hansen; four sons, Bart, Bud, Blaine and Carl Hansen; one daughter, Laura Hansen; one brother, Edwin Hansen; and 10 grandchildren.

Glen McLean Spokane

No service will be held for Glen W. McLean, at his request. Ball & Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of cremation.

Mr. McLean, 90, died Tuesday.

He was born in Davenport, Wash., and farmed near Connell, Wash. He owned Spokane Armature Works for 16 years and also worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the wheat-allotment program for six years before retiring in 1967.

He was a member of the Senior Bowling League.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Gladys McLean, and one sister, Mildred Caughey of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Helen Sherar Spokane

Memorial service for Helen C. Sherar, 85, will be at a later date. Merchant Funeral Home of Clarkston, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sherar, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday at Tri-State Health and Rehabilitation in Clarkston, where she had been for the past year.

She and her husband, Archie Sherar, settled in Spokane, and she worked for Singer Sewing Machine Co. in sales and teaching sewing classes. They also operated the Town Topper Gift and Toy Store in downtown Spokane for 11 years.

Mrs. Sherar later worked in real estate.

She was a member of the Ladies of the Elks.

Survivors include her husband of 68 years; one daughter, Anita McKee of Lewiston; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and four greatgreat-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gonzaga University.

Neeta Hardee Spokane

Memorial service for Neeta M. Hardee, 72, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Hardee, who died Wednesday, was born in Elk.

She had lived in Spokane and moved to Addy, Wash., for 16 years. She recently moved back to Spokane.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Curtis Hardee, died in 1987.

She is survived by three daughters, Charlene Walt and Marge Wright, both of Spokane, and Neeta Bunting of Springdale, Wash.; two sons, Clifton Hardee of Spokane and David Hardee of Chewelah, Wash.; four sisters, Georgia Strebeck of Worley, Idaho, Edith Boyd and Lucy Magnuson, both of Spokane, and Darlene Bowsher of Tum Tum, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Clifton Winkleblack Marshall

Memorial service for Clifton L. Winkleblack, 69, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Marshall Community Church. Inurnment will follow at Marshall Cemetery. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Winkleblack, who died Tuesday, was born in Strong City, Okla.

He had served in the merchant marine for 16 years. In 1958 he went to work for an insurance company and later for the city of Spokane.

In 1971 he began working for Eastern Washington University as the physical plant maintenance supervisor. He retired in 1984.

He was a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Lerue; two daughters, Michele Vazquez and Pamela Nalder; four brothers, two sisters and three grandchildren.
