Compost facility not such a bad neighbor I read with interest your article about the compost facility at Colbert (May 25 North Side Voice).
Your reporter says that it never stopped sending foul odors into the air during Spokane’s warm winter. That is a very strong statement and never is a poor choice of words. We have been called by one of the complaining neighbors to come to their house and smell the foul odor. The first time we couldn’t drive fast enough to catch it smelling and another time the smell lasted 45 seconds and passed away.
Your reporter mentions statements by Mayor Jack Geraghty and City Councilwoman Bev Numbers who, to our knowledge, have never been on the site.
The decision to close this facility will have a big economic impact on the community.
Where will you find a place to dump yard waste for free when the compost site is closed? Can the burner take that much more garbage to burn? Is this a burnable commodity?
Does this site put off odors any different than the horse farm near us? Does the transfer station itself add odors to the neighborhood?
Are there gases coming up from the old landfill that is a Superfund cleanup site?
We find this facility to be a good neighbor - no noise at night, no garbage thrown around, no junk cars in the front yard, and producing a product we can all use. Paula Davis Colbert
