Walter Mateke

Spokane

Graveside service for Walter Mateke, 81, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mateke, who died Sunday, was born in West Allis, Wis.

He had lived in Spokane since he was an infant.

During World War II he was a welding instructor in the Seattle shipyards. After the war, he worked for Sunshine Mining Co. and also operated a dairy in Spokane. He retired in the late 1960s.

He was a member of the Washington Dairymen’s Association.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Lillian Mateke; two daughters, Charlotte Kurle of Spokane and Judy Ermert of Naples, Fla.; two sisters, Wendy Kubes of Wisconsin and Martha Sturm of Illinois; one brother, Oswald Meteke of California; six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

Kori Knutson Seattle

A memorial gathering for Kori Jean Knutson, 25, is planned for Saturday at her mother’s home in Manchester, Wash.

Miss Knutson, who was born in Bethesda, Md., died May 28 from injuries suffered in an auto accident in Kona, Hawaii, while she was on vacation.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1988 and had lived in the Seattle area since 1989.

She had worked for Eddie Bauer, United Parcel Service and a real estate appraisal firm in Bellevue, Wash.

She is survived by her parents, Paul Knutson of Seattle and Lois Knutson of Manchester, Wash.; one sister, Erika Breen of Palm Springs, Fla.; and grandparents, Palmer and Lucille Knutson of Richland, and Maxine Denny of Ocean Shores, Wash.

Raleen Johns

Spokane

Memorial service for Raleen E. (Oscarson) Johns, 40, is set for 3:30 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial was previously held.

Mrs. Johns, who died Monday from cancer, was born in Duluth, Minn.

She graduated from Shadle Park High School and Eastern Washington University and was a registered dietician. She had worked as the director of food service at the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children for 15 years.

She was a member of the Greater Spokane, Washington State and American Dietetic Associations.

Mrs. Johns is survived by her husband of 16 years, Robert Johns, and one daughter, Amanda Johns, both at home; her parents, Ralph and Beverly Oscarson of Spokane; and three brothers, Ronald, Ralph and Bruce Oscarson, all of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Donald Leonard Jr.

Spokane

Service for Donald R. “Donnie” Leonard will be held at 1 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Leonard died Saturday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

He was born in Spokane and worked as a truck driver.

He is survived by his former wife, Kristine Leonard of Spokane; one son, Tyler Leonard, and one daughter, Afton Leonard, both of Spokane; his father, Donald Leonard Sr. of Clark Fork, Idaho; his mother, Kathleen Meshew of Twin Lakes, Idaho; and one sister, Sherrie Clark of Spokane.

Evelyn Paetel

Spokane

Service for Evelyn C. Paetel, 84, a lifetime Spokane resident, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South with burial at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Paetel died Monday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and was a clerk at a Spokane bakery. She and her husband operated a farm machinery dealership and a furniture store in the Spokane area.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Rudy Paetel; one daughter, Marilyn Mauer of Liberty Lake; three sisters, Ruth Slind of Kendrick, Idaho, Margaret Moline of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Alice Peterson of Spokane; five brothers, John, Lloyd, Stanford and Roy Leland, all of Spokane, and Warren Leland of Seattle; four grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

Charles Gordon

Spokane

Funeral Mass for Charles L. Gordon, 76, will be at 9 a.m. today at St. Paschal Catholic Church. Private inurnment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gordon, who was born in Red Deer, Alberta, died Monday.

He had lived in Spokane for 41 years and was a dental technician.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Gordon is survived by his wife, Laurene Gordon; two sons, Thomas Gordon of Yuma, Ariz., and Timothy Gordon of Westport, Wash.; three daughters, Sandra Viall of Westport, and Sharon Schiewe and Leesa Sjolin, both of Spokane; his stepmother, Maggie Gordon of Surrey, British Columbia; and six grandchildren.

Kenneth Campbell

Spokane

Private service was held for Kenneth H. Campbell, 83.

Mr. Campbell, who died Monday, was born in Eureka, Calif.

He worked for the city of Spokane Alarm and Signal Department and retired in 1977. He had lived in Spokane for 35 years.

He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Keith Campbell of Spokane; two sisters, Naomi Smith of Spokane and Opal Tallmadge of Troy, Mont.; four granddaughters and one greatgranddaughter.

Dwyla Nelsen

Spokane

Service for Dwyla Poirier Nelsen, 78, is planned for 1:30 p.m. Friday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Nelsen, who died Monday, was born in Coeur d’Alene.

She was a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and had worked for Utter Motor Company.

She was a member of the Kalispel Grange in Usk, Wash., and the Sorelle Club in Spokane.

Her husband, Leonard Nelsen, died in 1967.

Survivors include one son, Richard Nelsen; one daughter, Carolyn Nice; one sister, Lucille Lutz; one brother, Milton Poirier; three grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Marguerite Barber

Spokane

Private graveside service for Marguerite Barber, 91, will be held today. Cheney Funeral Chapel is charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Barber, who died Friday, was born in Farwell, Mich.

She graduated from Kent (Wash.) High School and the University of Washington. She moved to Cheney with her family in 1923.

She and her husband, Leslie Barber, lived in Colfax, Wash. He died in 1954, and she moved to the family home in Cheney in 1963.

Mrs. Barber had worked in social services in Seattle and Walla Walla, as an executive secretary for State Farm Insurance in Yakima and Colfax, and for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Colfax.

She was a member of Delta Zeta sorority, Kappa Chapter, and the Spokane Rose Society.

She is survived by one son, David Barber of Seattle; one daughter, Mary George of Cheney; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Albert Moore

Spokane

Service for Albert V. Moore, 79, is set for 2 p.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home with burial at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Moore, who was born in Deep Creek, Wash., died Monday.

He worked as a millwright for Inland Empire Paper Co. for 35 years before retiring in 1980.

His wife, Anna Moore, died in 1981.

He is survived by two sons, Clifford and Robert Moore, both of Spokane; two daughters, Shirley Wood of Hillsboro, Ore., and Janet Palmen of Spokane; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Juanita Robinson

Deer Park

Service for Juanita L. Robinson, 75, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park Cemetery. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Robinson, who died Monday, was born in Fairfield.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Deer Park for more than 50 years. Her husband, Frank Robinson, died in 1983.

She is survived by two daughters, June Ferguson and Betty Miller, both of Deer Park; one son, John Robinson of Spokane; one sister, Ruth Hopkins of Spokane; one brother, Roy Landfried of Coeur d’Alene; nine grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.

Nellie Beloved

Spokane

Service for Nellie F. Beloved, 89, is set for 2 p.m. Friday at HennesseySmith Funeral Home with private burial at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Beloved, a 64-year Spokane resident, died Monday.

Born in Sheho, Saskatchewan, she was a homemaker.

Her husband, Louis Beloved, died in 1962.

She is survived by one son, Howard Beloved of Spokane; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

June Garritano

Spokane

Memorial service for June H. Garritano, 68, is set for 3 p.m. Friday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Born in Gladstone, Maine, Mrs. Garritano died Monday.

She had worked as a waitress and lived in Spokane for more than 59 years.

She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Charles Garritano; five brothers, Wayne, Larry, Durward and Alan Hamann, all of Spokane, and Bud Hamann of Jacksonville, Fla.; and one sister, Mae Arbogast of Spokane.

Robert Dwyer

Spokane

Memorial service for Robert P. Dwyer, 79, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, where he was a member. Private inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dwyer, who was born in Cataldo, Idaho, died Monday.

He graduated from Gonzaga Preparatory School and Gonzaga University Law School.

He worked for the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C., and for Sen. Henry Dworshak of Idaho for three years.

He was an attorney in Wallace from 1961 until he retired in 1980 and moved back to Spokane.

Mr. Dwyer served in the Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Bernadette Dwyer; two sons, Dennis Dwyer of Spokane and Michael Dwyer of Seattle; two daughters, Sheila Houck of Missoula and Kathleen Vereb of Seattle; and eight grandchildren.
