Woman Admits Setting Clinic Fires

Associated Press

The Oregon mother convicted in the shooting of a Kansas abortion doctor admitted Wednesday that she set a series of fires at abortion clinics in Oregon, Nevada and California.

Shelley Shannon’s attorney said she acted alone, but a prosecutor said a federal task force would continue its investigation into the six Western clinic attacks and into others, seeking evidence of a nationwide conspiracy.

Shannon, 39, has also been implicated in the 1993 fire bombing of an aboriton clinic in Boise.

U.S. District Judge James Redden set sentencing for Aug. 24.

Shannon originally was charged with 30 counts involving attacks on clinics in four states. Twenty counts were dropped in exchange for her guilty plea to 10 counts.
